Emeralds: Birthstone for May

Emeralds are the birthstone for the month of May and for the astrological sign of Cancer. They are also the gems for the 20th and 35th wedding anniversaries.

Emeralds come from the mineral class called "Beryl" and have been mined since 1500 BC in Egypt. Today, Columbia is the world's largest producer of the beautiful gemstone. The color of an emerald can very from very light green (which some will refer to as just green beryl) to a deeper greenish-blue variety.
